Another view of the 1955 Lincoln Futura concept car. It was later sold to George Barris who converted it into the Batmobile. I wrote a blog entry about this last December titled The Original Batmobile, but just found this other great image.

’ Golden Sahara originally started out as 1953 Lincoln Capri Hard Top. The low body weight and flowing body silhouette gave full balance. Hand formed steel panels detailed to the ultimate shape. Split rear fins extended from center rear fender scoops. Full circle rear trunk impression spare tire cover was built into the hood, curved down into a horizontal grill shell opening. Vertical headlight shells were installed into fenders and bullet bumpers.

The Hirohata Merc

Bob Hirohata’s 1951 Mercury is one of the most famous of all early custom cars. The car itself has been closely associated with George Barris, but it was actually created by Hirohata, who was a boat designer at the time.
