What Makes Sammy Run-Rare Cinescope DVD

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

Budd Schulberg's notorious novel of blind ambition in old Hollywood was twice adapted for live TV. Broadway actor Larry Blyden stars as Sammy Glick, a man who doesn't care who he walks over to get to the top, in this 1959 production, which was broadcast live on NBC's "Sunday Showcase" over two nights. John Forsythe, Barbara Rush and Dina Merrill co-star. The disc was mastered from a kinescope recording (a process of filming directly from a TV screen) and is accordingly low fidelity. Features commentary by stars Merrill and Rush, and a 2008 interview with Schulberg, whose speech is subtitled for clarity.

Very cool. Before hosting What's My Line, Larry Blyden was best known for his roles on a couple of Twilight Zone episodes, "A Nice Place To Visit" with Sebastian Cabot, and "Showdown with Rance McGrew" with Arch Johnson.
